This historic residence had a 188 SF kitchen that had not been altered since it was built in the 1930s, and accommodated only one person comfortably. With a family of five and two dogs, my clients wanted a kitchen that would be spacious and functional, yet still maintain the traditional style of the original home.

To answer the needs of this large and bustling family, we designed a 430 SF kitchen addition with a casual seating area near the large bay window, including a sofa, side chairs and a coffee table. The bright, bay windows provide a showcase for the property’s expansive backyard while the adjacent french door connects to the patio, bringing in still more natural light.

At the center of the space, a generous island serves as a gathering place when the family entertains. The decorative recessed ceiling overhead emphasizes the meeting point of form and function.

By matching original details, the addition became a seamless improvement. We were able to do a custom match of the existing 14" painted redwood siding. Some of the historical details that were repeated and/or matched are the dining room bay window, the french doors and the unique siding.
